BCT Exams
This is the only official test for non-native speakers’ Business Chinese level, and it was developed by Peking University at the request of the Office of Chinese Language Council International. The test is designed to aid Chinese employers and universities to evaluate the Chinese speaking ability of a non-native speaking applicant, and to provide candidates with an official certificate of their Chinese proficiency. The test is split into two parts, Listening and Reading, and Speaking and Writing. A particular advantage of the BCT is that the test can be taken on a computer, thus precluding you from having to be able to hand-write Chinese characters. You can take the test in China or abroad. We offer online Chinese courses to prepare you for all levels of the test. We first ask that you sign up for a free trial class, during which we will conduct a BCT-appropriate assessment. Once we have done this we can advise you on what levels you should aim for, and the required time frame. In addition to providing you with all the necessary vocabulary and grammar we would also hope to leave sufficient time to tailor your classes to the particular areas of business you are interested in.BCT Level 1 This level assumes some ability in general Mandarin Chinese, but zero ability in business Chinese. The aim of this course will be to fill in the gaps of your knowledge – building on what you already know and giving you the appropriate vocabulary you need for introductions with business partners, plus a general understanding of Chinese business etiquette.
BCT Level 2
This level assumes a confidence in general and business Chinese, and therefore focuses on more specific situations such as negotiations, presentation and asking questions about products and supply. There is also scope to include general areas of interest to you.
BCT Level 3
At this level you general Chinese ability and business Chinese ability are both strong, but there is a great deal of specific vocabulary you are missing. You are generally able to get your meaning across, but with a sustained period of studying more precise words you will be considered a more fluent speaker. In addition, the written language of Chinese business will largely remain unfamiliar, and your ability to participate in meetings may be lacking. Level 3 will focus on tightening up on these key areas.
BCT Level 4
The aim here is to go beyond an ability to generally understand all that’s around you in a business context, and to hone in on your own ability to express yourself in business meetings, negotiations and discussions, ensuring you have the appropriate language in all situations, and are able to explain your point of view on a range of issues.
BCT Level 5
The key requirement at this level is that you can explain in Chinese a range of complex business related issues. You should be able to do so fluently both in writing and speaking, and likewise be able to understand what is being said by a native speaker, or in a text, on a complex business issue.
